Emma Soprano Mastracchio

Emma Soprano Mastracchio of Sayre PA passed away peacefully on Saturday May 5, 2012 with her family by her side. She was born on May 13, 1923 to the late Louis and Maria DeSisto Soprano of Sayre PA. She is survived by her children Maria Mastracchio of Sayre, Joseph Mastracchio and wife Debbie of Millerstown PA, Micheline Mastracchio (Marge Krah) of Wildwood Crest NJ, Ann Drury of Newport PA, Gloria Calveric of Sayre, and Louis Mastracchio (Doraine “Squeak” Wilkins) of Newport PA and Waverly NY, her daughter-in-law Brenda Mastracchio of Newport PA, her grandchildren Emma Calveric, Vanessa Mastracchio, Alicia Mastracchio Imler and husband Brian, Carmon Mastracchio, Ryan, Nicholas, & Sabrina Mastracchio, Michael Drury and wife Angel, 8 great grandchildren, sister Irene Muscari of New Mexico, sister-in-law Christine Soprano of Sayre, many special nieces, nephews, and numerous cousins, and longtime family friend Judy Cochi. Emma was preceded in death by her husband Michael, her son Michael Angelo, her sisters Margaret, Esther, and Clara, her brothers Patrick, Robert, and Leonard, and her sons-in-law John M. Calveric and David Drury. Emma was first and foremost a loving wife and mother who dedicated her life to caring for her family. She was a traveler who made pilgrimages to Lourdes, Fatima, and Medjugorje, as well as visiting many other cities and countries in the world. A lifelong communicant of Epiphany Parish in Sayre, Emma was a member of the Adoration Chapel and the Altar and Rosary Society. Besides raising her children, Emma’s proudest accomplishment was in the summer of 1967 when she packed up her husband, 7 kids, and the station wagon, put them all on an ocean liner and sailed to Italy. It was there that they spent the entire summer living in Sassinoro and experiencing first hand their family’s heritage. Emma loved to cook, and the smell of her signature spaghetti sauce simmering on the stove on Thursdays and Sundays will be long remembered and missed by her family and friends. On any given day you could find Emma attending mass at Epiphany or visiting sick family members or friends at the hospital or in their homes. Emma loved being of good service to her community, and served as a member and officer of the Business and Professional Women’s Organization, the St. Joseph’s Club, and the Sons of Italy Madre Lodge 1342. Her other passions included watching her beloved New York Yankees play baseball, enjoying classic movies, and attending family parties and events. Emma worked at her husband’s side for many years at Mastracchio’s Bakery, and somehow managed to simultaneously make the bread and spoil a family of 7 children. Emma Mastracchio was full of love, compassion, and enthusiasm for life. Her generous spirit and sense of fun will be sorely missed by all who know and love her. The family would like to express deep gratitude for the tender care Emma received from Nurse Anja Miller and her colleagues at Guthrie Hospice along with her personal care assistants Iona Cannavino and Mary Jane Forest. The family will receive friends at the Alteri-Bowen Funeral Home on Wednesday May 9, 2012 from 4:00-7:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Blessed Trinity Parish, St. James Catholic Church, Clark St., Waverly NY at 9:30 am on Thursday May 10, 2012. Interment will follow at the Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery in Athens PA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be directed to Epiphany Elementary School, Guthrie Hospice, or the charity of one’s choice in Emma’s name.
