Lawrence Frank, “Larry” Gehring,72, of LeRaysville passed away on May 13, 2024 with his loving wife by his side at Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, NY from Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Larry was a man who lived his life for others. He was devoted to his wife whom he idolized for their 34 years of marriage. He loved his family and friends and was always there to provide support or help in any way possible. He was the local technology expert helping people with computer or other tech issues. He gave of himself generously never expecting or wanting recognition; quite the contrary, he preferred to go about his good deeds quietly. Born in Chester, PA on November 19,1951, to Charles and Lillie (Grayson) Gehring, Larry grew up being very active in Boy Scouts and pursuing music lessons. He graduated from Chester High in 1969 then West Chester University in 1973 where he majored in music education. Larry began his teaching career at the Northeast Bradford School District In 1973 and for 25 years he taught general music classes, gave instrumental lessons, directed the high school chorus, and led the marching band. He also served as a class advisor and was always willing to help in any way necessary when it came to his students and school activities. After teaching music for 25 years, Larry became the technology coordinator at NEB where his skill and dedication were evident once again. Larry was very active in his professional union having held the office of president for several years. He worked to make things better for those with whom he worked and to benefit teachers in the years to come. Larry’s devotion to his Episcopal faith began when he joined a Boy Scout troop that was sponsored by a church in Chester, PA. Thus began his journey of serving his Lord and the church in every way possible. Currently Larry was extremely active in his church, Christ Episcopal, Towanda, serving as Junior Warden, Verger, Crucifer, choir member, soloist, music director, technology specialist, and all-around handy man. If anything needed to be done, Larry was there to take care of it. An extremely talented musician, Larry played many instruments and enjoyed being a member of several musical groups. He co-directed the Wyalusing Community and Troy Community Bands but also played in several other music ensembles. He was a member of the Northern Tier Orchestra, often played in the pit band for local high school musicals, and supplied music for Veteran’s Day programs. He led the Wyalusing Community Band on the band wagon in local parades and also directed the music for Wyalusing’s annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony. As one person put it, “He was the backbone of the community band; directing, organizing, and playing wherever and whenever he was asked. He was truly one of those people who just quietly did what was needed without expectation of recognition.” On November 3, 1989, Larry married the love of his life, Maurine Ellen Hart. They met through their shared love of music, and they enjoyed singing together at church, weddings, anniversaries, and any other opportunities that presented themselves. They also enjoyed attending musical performances and had recently traveled to Las Vegas to see Barry Manilow in concert. During their retirement they enjoyed taking cruises, visiting Hawaii and other interesting places, and just spending time together. Besides his wife, Larry is survived by his stepchildren Matthew (Wendy) Keeney, Colleen (Phillip) Woodring, Miranda (Mike) Wulff, and daughter-in-law Kristie Gehring. He was Pop-pop to Jasmine (Josh) Brown, Elizabeth (Anthony) Benninger, Bella Clark, Madelyn Clark, Makayla Wulff, Jayde Gehring, Jayce Gehring, Jameson and Joelle Brown, Emmett and Abel Benninger, and Piper Gehring. He is also survived by his brothers Charles Gehring of Palm Harbor, FL, James (Patty Griffith) Gehring of Chester, PA, and sister Patsy Dixon of Ridley Park, PA as well as several brothers/sisters-in-law and a host of friends and acquaintances all of whom will miss his zest for life, unending wit, and generous spirit. A memorial service and celebration of Larry’s life will be held on Sunday, June 2, 2024, at 2 pm at Christ Episcopal Church, 1 Main St, Towanda, PA. The family will be available for visitation one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be directed to the organ repair fund at Christ Episcopal Church.
