Joseph R. "Joe" Bittner

Joseph R. “Joe” Bittner of Towanda passed away Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2026. He was 94. Born December 17, 1931 to Winifred (née Miller) and Ertl James “Jim” Bittner in Philadelphia, Joe was the eldest of six children. Following his graduation from Olney High School in Philadelphia, Joe decided to follow his father’s footsteps in law enforcement and went to the Philadelphia Police Academy. Joe also served as Command Sergeant Major in the U.S. Army Reserves. He remained a member of the Fraternal Order of Police until his passing. Handsome, debonair, and effortlessly charming, Joe was, in the truest sense of the word, a gentleman. He carried himself with kindness, humility, and a quiet strength that earned the respect of everyone he met. That dedication to protecting others was the thread that ran through his entire life. For many years, Joe served as a highway patrolman for the Philadelphia Police Department, riding his Harley Davidson with pride. He loved sharing stories from his days on two wheels—especially the incredible claim that he delivered 100 babies on the side of the road! We always joked with him that if he had just driven a little faster, those mothers might have actually made it to the hospital in time. Joe’s duty and skill naturally led him to high-profile service. Joe provided security for notable figures ranging from legendary comedian Don Rickles to then-Presidential candidate John F. Kennedy. Following his retirement from the police force, he served as a bodyguard for former Philadelphia Police Commissioner and Mayor Frank Rizzo. Yet despite standing guard for leaders, icons, and celebrities, Joe remained completely grounded, approachable, and deeply humble. When he wasn't on duty, Joe’s love for the outdoors took center stage. Some of his happiest moments were spent at the cabin in Standing Stone, surrounded by nature, good conversation, and the camaraderie of his hunting buddies. For Joe, those trips were about tradition, shared laughter, lifelong bonds, and the quiet peace of the woods. Above all else, Joe was a true family man who lived for gatherings and found genuine joy in celebrating every occasion. His journey through love was a storied one—having been married four times, surviving two wives, and divorcing one. But Joe often told friends and family that he "saved the best for last." That grand final chapter belonged to his beloved wife, Laurie. Together, they shared 17 incredible, laughter-filled years. Laurie was right by his side, holding his hand when he passed. We will miss his stories, sharp wit, and steady guidance. We will remember him in the rumble of a passing motorcycle, the quiet rustle of the woods, and every toast raised at family celebrations. In addition to Laurie, Joe is survived by his daughter Diane (Richard) Apple of Florida; stepchildren Lisa DeRose, also of Florida; C. Erik Hartmann of Pittsburgh; Jennifer (Les) Kingsley of East Smithfield; and D. Robert (Patricia) Hartmann of Towanda; grandchildren Christopher (Brittany) Apple of Albany, NY; Kyle (Kayla) Apple of Albrightsville; Kevin (Caitlin Cron) Kingsley of Columbia Cross Roads; Dylan Hartmann, Jessica Hartmann and Mason Hartmann, all of Towanda; and C. Luke Hartmann, who is serving in the U.S. Navy in California. Joe is also survived by his brother, Gerard (Leila) Bittner of Florida; sister Anne Marie Manzi of New Jersey; many nieces and nephews including special niece Kim Borghetti of California; Heather (Brian) Nichols of Columbia Cross Roads; and several great-grandchildren. Joe was predeceased by his parents; two children, Joyce and Joseph R. Bittner, Jr.; and siblings and their spouses James Bittner, Harry Bittner and Faith Moussett. Arrangements are entrusted to Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda, PA. A private celebration of Joe’s life will be held at a later date. Until then, we raise a glass and toast to Joe.
